Authorised and Unauthorised Absence of Pupils of Compulsory School age
ATTENDANCE (UP TO AND INCLUDING 28TH JUNE 2021)
Number of authorised and unauthorised absences:
To improve attendance to 96.8% for academic year 2021- 2022.
- Pupils whose attendance is below 95% are, on average 6 months behind pupils whose attendance is above 95%.
- Pupils whose attendance is below 90% are, on average 1 year behind pupils whose attendance is above 95%.
If all children were in school 95%-100% of the time, this would have a significant impact on our children’s achievements and their life chances.
‘The Education (Pupil’s Attendance Records) Regulations 1991’
These regulations state two types of absence, Authorised and Unauthorised, which are defined as follows:
a. Sickness or any unavoidable cause (includes hospital, orthodontic, speech therapist appointments etc. Parents are requested to arrange appointments for their child outside school hours where possible).
b. Holidays should be taken during normal school closures. There is no entitlement to holiday taken in term time. Penalty fines may be issued for holidays taken in term time.
c. Religious Observance by a religious body to which the parents belong.
Parents/carers are asked to put any requests for absence in writing to the Head Teacher.
Any absence which does not fall into the above categories. Examples would be:
- Parent/carer ill
- Overslept/late home last night
- Visited Grandparents/new baby etc.
- Went shopping/seaside/day trip etc.
- Holidays taken in term-time
- Arrival at school after registration unless for an ‘authorised’ reason
All absences and lateness must be reported to school either by a phone call or note to school. ‘Reason for Absence’ slips are available at the school’s main reception area for your convenience.
The law requires us to report all unauthorised absences and lateness and attendance registers are inspected regularly by the authorities. If a child arrives after the register has been marked this will be recorded as ‘late’ and has to be counted as a half day unauthorised absence. Persistent absence and lateness is monitored by the authorities.
Young children learn quickly. We have an intensive curriculum and children miss a lot of valuable learning in just one day, which is difficult to re-visit. Ongoing assessment and monitoring of progress is continual.
